The Moldovan Parliament has agreed to extend a suspension of the citizenship by investment programme until the 1st of September 2020. Effectively, this means that no applications under the Moldova Citizenship by Investment Programme can be submitted until the Moldovan Government decides to remove the moratorium on the programme. This constitutes the third extension of the moratorium on the programme. The first suspension was approved on the 31st July 2019 for a period of four months, and was subsequently extended by another two months. During the moratorium, legislators are expected to review the programme's requirements and the publication of names of individuals obtaining Moldovan citizenship through the programme.
The State Secretary at the Ministry of Economics and Infrastructure, Ms Iuliana Dragalin has indicated that the scope of the extension of the suspension of the programme is to improve the legislation which brings numerous benefits to the country, whilst reviewing any risks the programme might have.
Moldova Citizenship Programme
The Moldova Citizenship by Investment Programme (MCBI) was launched in 2018 and allowed investors the opportunity to obtain Moldovan citizenship after a contribution to the Moldova Public Investment Fund (PIF). Apart from government due diligence and processing fees, applicants were required to pay a non-refundable fee of €100,000 on approval of the application.
